YOUNG LEARNERS EXPLORE RENEWABLE ENERGY ON GWD

June 2025.

In celebration of Global Wind Day, Grade 3 and 4 learners from three local schools in the Witzenberg area took part in an interactive and engaging event designed to spark curiosity about renewable energy. Through hands-on activities and fun-filled learning, the young participants were introduced to the basics of wind power and the important role wind farms play in creating a cleaner, more sustainable future for their communities and beyond.

As part of the event, learners from Wanganella NGK Primary School, Laastedrif NGK Primary School, and Northridge NGK Primary School created and decorated their own pinwheels, making the experience both engaging and memorable.

“Global Wind Day is a powerful platform to ignite curiosity in young minds. By introducing them to the basics of renewable energy and the role of wind farms, we hope to see an increase in knowledge, environmental consciousness and behavioural change within the community. We hope to also inspire future interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields,” said Gwynne-Lee Borcherds, Economic Development Manager for Perdekraal East Wind Farm, the funders of the event.

To wrap up the day, learners participated in a fun and interactive quiz, putting their new knowledge to the test and reinforcing what they had discovered. Prizes, including colouring crayons, were awarded to those who answered questions correctly. Each learner also received a goody bag and a light lunch, ensuring a joyful and enriching experience for all.

“We are grateful to Perdekraal East Wind Farm for giving our Grade 3 and 4 learners the chance to step outside the classroom and learn about wind energy in such a fun and practical way. The experience sparked excitement among both the learners and their parents, and it helped raise awareness about the role of renewable energy in our environment and communities. It’s a memory that will stay with them for years to come,” said Janine Baaitjies, Northridge NGK Primary School Principal.

Held annually on the 15th of June, Global Wind Day is a worldwide event that highlights the power and potential of wind energy.
