SKOONVELD PROGRAMME RESTORES LOCAL ECOSYSTEM

May 2025.

In response to the growing threat posed by invasive alien vegetation in the Ceres Mountain Fynbos Nature Reserve, the Skoonveld Programme has been launched to protect and restore the health of the natural veld, vital for preserving biodiversity, safeguarding water resources, and supporting local farming communities. Funded by Perdekraal East Wind Farm, the aim of this project is to restore and maintain natural ecosystems, while upskilling and creating employment for the local youth.

Established in 2016 by the Ceres Business Initiative (CBI), the programme plays a crucial role in managing invasive alien plant infestations. These plants typically consume more water than indigenous species, and their removal helps to conserve water, which is a critical resource for the apple farmers in the area.

“Since 2021, we have proudly provided support towards this programme through our Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) grant funding initiative. This funding has made a meaningful impact, allowing the programme to expand its reach by an estimated 40%, covering an additional 800 hectares,” stated Gwynne-Lee Borcherds, Economic Development Manager for Perderkraal East Wind Farm.

Through the wind farm’s funding, essential resources have been provided for training, personal protective equipment (PPE), and field tools like chainsaws, loppers, and herbicide applicators. This support has enabled local contractors to hire youth from local communities, helping the project not only restore ecosystems but also generate jobs and skill-building opportunities.

The training included chainsaw handling, first aid, herbicide application, and other fieldwork essentials, equipping local youth with both practical knowledge and work experience.

“The support from Perdekraal East Wind Farm has allowed the Skoonveld Programme to operate in a much wider area within the nature reserve. It has made a significant contribution by helping us scale our impact and protect more of this critical natural environment,” said Anton Reinecke, Programme Founder and CBI representative.

Looking ahead, the long-term vision of Programme Skoonveld is to bring all 7,000 hectares of the Ceres Mountain Fynbos Nature Reserve under control.
