Perdekraal East Wind Farm has announced that it has achieved over a million hours without a single lost-time-incident, a health and safety highlight in this renewable energy project’s construction programme.

The millionth hour was achieved on 19 November 2019 at 17:00.  The spotless record has continued and is now closer over 1 105 000 hours as the project enters the last six months of construction.

Situated within the Witzenberg Local Municipality, it is the Western Cape’s largest BW4 wind farm, so considering the sheer scale of the project, the multiple level of activities and the complexities involved, it is an the impressive achievement.

The majority of the workforce during the peak construction period has been drawn from the surrounding communities of Ceres, Nduli, Bella Vista and Prince Alfred Hamlet, which have directly benefitted from the skills development programmes.

“We believe that we have been able to achieve this major milestone of well over 1 million hours without a lost time incident is due to a broad organization-wide approach to safety management, as well as the training that our local workforce has undergone over the last few months,” said Glenn Hobson, Construction Project Manager for Perdekraal East Wind Farm.

The 110MW Perdekraal East Wind Farm spans 3 055 hectares and will generate enough clean electricity to power up over 111 000 South African homes. The wind farm is expected to achieve its commercial operations date by end July 2020, when it will begin adding clean renewable power into the national grid.  In addition to zero carbon emissions and reduced use of fossil fuels, the country will benefit from this additional power at a time when it most needs it.
